W e l c o m e

Welcome to the web page of the "Kempf Database Ostracoda". This database, until recently known mainly under the name "Cologne Database Ostracoda", is meanwhile in existence since more than 25 years.

Aim of the database was and is to produce several kinds of novel works of reference in connection with bibliographies that lead to the whole literature on marine and nonmarine Ostracoda from 1758 onwards until nowadays.

P u b l i c a t i o n s

With pleasure can be announced that two new parts of the database could be completed and published in 2002:

     •   Part 10 of "Index and Bibliography of  N o n m a r i n e  Ostracoda" and

     •   Part 10 of "Index and Bibliography of  M a r i n e  Ostracoda".

Part 10 of "Index and Bibliography of  N o n m a r i n e  Ostracoda" is a bibliography ("Bibliography D") with over 1,500 references to nontaxonomic publications dealing with all modern aspects of the application of nonmarine Ostracoda. It has been created over the years 1991 to 2001 and covers literature until December 2001. Together with the hitherto published bibliographies A, B, and C the total number of references to publications on nonmarine Ostracoda has thereby been raised to about 5,250.

Part 10 of "Index and Bibliography of  M a r i n e  Ostracoda" is as well a bibliography ("Bibliography D") with 1,565 references to nontaxonomic publications dealing with all modern aspects of the application of marine Ostracoda. It has been created over the years 1994 to 2002 and covers literature until March 2002. Together with the hitherto published bibliographies A, B, and C the total number of references to publications on marine Ostracoda is thereby raised to more than 9,400.

As is the case with all the bibliographies published by myself in the past, these bibliographies are not heterogeneous collections of references. On the contrary, all the publications to which is referred to have been seen and evaluated. This is the reason for the quality and completeness of the references. As is known from my hitherto published bibliographies, all titles of journals are cited without abbreviations. As a consequence, no user has to deal with expressions like  "Bulletin de l'I.F.A.N."  or  "Ann. Fac. Agrar. dell'U.C.S.C."  or  "Documents du C.E.R.L.A.T."  which are burdening the user of a bibliography with a lot of unnecessary work.

New in "Bibliography D" of both the nonmarine and the marine series is the fact that ISSN and ISBN numbers are cited in the references whenever those were traceable. Also new is the fact that not only titles of publications in Russian or Chinese language, but all titles of publications in other languages than English (French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, etc.) have additionally been provided with a translation into English, which has been inserted in parentheses. As printed media, these bibliographies would have been books of more than 200 pages, like "Bibliography B" of "Index and Bibliography of Nonmarine Ostracoda".

Completely new, however, is the fact that with "Bibliography D" of both series for the first time parts of the "Kempf Database Ostracoda" were not published in the form of printed reference books, but in the form of HTML files on CD-ROM. As a consequence, to view the information as intended and to make use of the advantages of those files in comparison with printed books, it is necessary to apply a browser software, like "Internet Explorer" or "Netscape Navigator". As you will know already, one of the great advantages of HTML files is the possibility of a fast navigating through given hyperlinks. And, above all, you can make use of certain abilities of the browser software. You may use, for example, the "search" or "find" command from the edit menue. With this aid it is possible to search for any combination of letters or numbers. Or you may use the "copy" and "paste" commands for putting together references of interest to you in a new list.

Everybody interested in nonmarine and/or marine Ostracoda will be acquainted very soon with these new tools of reference which are only available from the author, as are complete sets of the printed parts 1 to 9 of "Index and Bibliography of Nonmarine Ostracoda" and the printed parts 1 to 9 of "Index and Bibliography of Marine Ostracoda".

I cannot get enough of those
delicious little Ostracoda -
if only more of them
were swimming in the water
instead of crawling in the mud
